Throughout Unbord, you will come across terms that each describe a part of the teaching and learning experience. This article is a short reference for understanding them. You do not need to use all of these concepts at the same time. You may simply create an independent quiz, join a class, or create a learning path to design a complete learning experience.
| Concept | Short definition |
|---|---|
| Educational content | An activity such as a wiki, flashcard, quiz, or video used for learning. |
| Learning path | A structure of several stages and activities that forms a more complete learning experience. |
| Class | A group of people brought together in connection with a learning path. |
| Assignment | A specific activity assigned to one or more people. |
| Resource | Content that Nuro uses when creating content. |
| Nuro | Unbord's AI assistant for content creation, learning design, and learning interaction. |
| XP or experience | Points recorded by completing certain learning activities. |
| Role | The scope of tasks and data a person can access in a learning path or class. |
| Subscription | Features, capabilities, or capacities enabled for a user's account. |
| Reports and transcript | Tools for viewing and interpreting activity and learning progress. |
Educational content is what a person works with for learning. In Unbord, there are four main types of content:
Wikis, flashcards, and quizzes can be used as independent content or placed in a learning path. In the current version of Unbord, video is used as part of a learning path. To choose the right tool, start with this question: "What is the person expected to do at this stage?" If they are expected to read something, a wiki is suitable; if they need to review, a flashcard; if they need to answer questions, a quiz; and if seeing something helps with better understanding, a video.
A learning path is a collection of stages and activities brought together to achieve a learning goal. For example, a learning path about the water cycle could include a wiki to explain the concept, a video to demonstrate the process, a quiz to practice what has been learned, and flashcards to review the material. A learning path is different from independent content. Independent content can be used on its own; a path, however, brings multiple activities together in a purposeful and trackable structure.
A class is a space for bringing people together in connection with a learning path. In a class, you can invite members, track activities and assignments, and, depending on your access, view the overall learning status.
A class and a learning path are not the same thing:
An assignment allows you to assign an activity or educational content to one or more specific people. When creating an assignment, you can specify the recipient or recipients, completion time, intended content, and amount of XP. The content may have already been created or may be created as part of the same process. Therefore, an assignment is not the content itself; it is a way to turn content or an activity into a specific task that needs to be completed and tracked.
A resource is a file or piece of content provided to Nuro so that it can use it when creating content. For example, a learning path creator can add an educational file as a resource and, once it is ready, ask Nuro to create a quiz, wiki, or flashcard based on that file. A resource is different from educational content. A resource is used to support the content creation process, and its file is not provided to the learner. It may also take some time after uploading to be processed and prepared for use by Nuro.
Nuro is Unbord's AI assistant. Nuro can be used in two main ways:
Content generated with Nuro should be reviewed before publication and edited if necessary.
XP stands for Experience Point. By completing certain learning activities, such as completing an assignment or watching a video in full, XP is recorded in a person's activity history. XP indicates participation and progress in activities, but on its own, it does not show how deep or complete the learning has been. To understand the learning status more accurately, XP should be viewed alongside information such as path completion, assignments, and reports.
A role determines what a person can do and what data they can see in a specific environment, such as a learning path or class. A user can have different roles in different situations. For example, they may be a learner in one path and work as an instructor or content creation collaborator in another path.
Details about specialized roles and their access are explained in the guides for paths, classes, and reports.
A subscription is different from a role. A role relates to a person's presence and responsibilities in a learning path or class; a subscription determines which features, capabilities, or capacities are enabled for their account. Therefore, a person may be allowed to create content in a learning path based on their role, while their content creation capabilities or limits may depend on their active account subscription. For details about this distinction, see the "Subscriptions and Access" article.
Reports help you view activity and progress based on your access level; for example, your personal progress report, the status of a class, or the performance of people in a learning path. A transcript is one of the outputs of the reports section and presents important learning information in a summarized view. None of the metrics, such as XP or completion percentage, is sufficient on its own to assess learning. This information becomes more valuable when viewed and interpreted together.
